Note on Stabilization and Color Behavior
Stabilizing turquoise is a common practice used to enhance the durability of the stone. However, in earlier periods—particularly in Iran—stabilization techniques were not as advanced as they are today. After inspecting this particular stone, I can confirm that it has undergone some level of stabilization.
During the faceting process, I observed that the stone absorbed water, which indicates that the stabilization was not fully effective. It appears the treatment did not penetrate deeply into the rough, and may be limited or absent on the faceted surfaces. This is evident when water is applied—the color becomes noticeably deeper, suggesting the stone is still porous and absorbing moisture.
I mention this to ensure full transparency: this is a natural turquoise that has been stabilized to improve hardness, but the process was not comprehensive. Some areas, especially those I have faceted, may show minimal or no stabilization.
Additional Note: Natural turquoise that has not been fully stabilized will naturally change color over time. This is a normal and expected process. The stone can be affected by skin oils, environmental humidity, and everyday chemicals such as shampoo, perfume, or cleaning products. These interactions may cause the turquoise to shift in tone—often developing a greenish hue—especially in areas with frequent exposure. This behavior is part of the stone’s organic character and is valued by many collectors for its evolving beauty.
